One's Environment plays a key role on our well being and is an influential aspect of the Godai.
A moist atmosphere softens the skin and generally causes the body to be moist. Whereas a dry atmosphere dries the skin and causes it to be rough and lacklustre. A foggy atmosphere causes depression. Environment in elation to the Godai can refer to the external environment (the outdoors) and work/social environment.
Our interaction with our external environment will be influenced by such factors as quality of air, the seasons and temperature.
Quality of air will be affected and reduced by industrial pollutants, car exhaust fumes and other noxious substances. Ambient air plays a vital role in the maintenance of health and is too often neglected or ignored.
Closely related to the quality of air is the influence of the changes in the atmosphere that accompany seasonal and geographic variations. A hot atmosphere disperses the natural force of breath and has a relaxing effect. Too great a degree of heat results in a breakdown of the components of blood leading to disease. It also causes sweating, diminishes the output of urine impairs digestion and induces constant thirst.
A cold atmosphere has a constricting effect, strengthens digestion and increases urine production. There is less sweating thus the elimination of toxins through the skin is reduced. Cold also causes constipation as the colon muscles remain constricted.
The seasons produce great changes in the body, and many diseases are primarily known by the season in which they occur e.g. spring is a healthy season.
The work environment like the social environment will also play an important part in our health. A stressful environment will create tension in our body e.g. the neck muscles, raise the acidity of the stomach causing heartburn and/or ulcers, coupled with a poor diet will also reduce our immune function and adversely affect our liver. We will be emotionally drained as well as energetically. This situation is also true in our social environment but combine the two and you have double the negative effect on our bodies and ultimately our health. Observe a depressed person there body posture will be hunched and drooping, they will have low energy levels and most often than not a poor diet based on refined foods leading to a poor digestive system, and a gloomy outlook on life.

Learning stress free exercises (yoga, Tai Chi), meditation and breathing properly will all help to counteract these stresses coupled with a good diet and trying to live in a good quality external environment although this may prove to be more difficult all the more reason to ensure our health is at its optimum level.A happy and content individual will have high energy levels, be vibrant and positive and can learn to cope with stressful situations there body will be able to handle these as their immune system will be at its optimum level, they will have a good digestive system capable of absorbing efficiently nutrients from food thus aiding their energy and mental levels. In the context of the Godai you can now see how the environment has an effect upon our health and how it influences the other factors within the Godai. It is therefore important to balance if we are to achieve overall health.
